History

Evolution of the Duleep Trophy

The Duleep Trophy was introduced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 1961–62 and takes its name from Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji, one of the earliest India-born cricketers to make his mark in English first-class cricket. It was created as a zonal competition sitting above the state-based Ranji Trophy, bringing the strongest players from each region into a single side.

Its purpose has always been selection-facing. By pitting zone against zone over multi-day red-ball matches, the tournament gives selectors a controlled look at how domestic batters and bowlers cope against the best opposition their region can field. Many India Test cricketers have used a Duleep Trophy season as the step between state cricket and international selection.

The structure has changed several times. Zones gave way to selection-based sides such as India Red, Blue and Green in 2016–17, the zonal format returned in 2022–23, and a four-team India A to D structure was used in 2024–25. Recent seasons have been played as a six-zone knockout, with quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final.

Duleep Trophy 2026-27 Schedule & Fixtures

The 2026-27 season is a six-team knockout. Quarter-finals started August 23, and both were still in progress as of August 24. The BCCI moved the final to Chennai so fans could watch the title decider live. Quarter-finals and semis stay closed-door at the CoE.

Central Zone won the 2025-26 Duleep Trophy, their 7th title, beating South Zone in the final. The win capped a campaign built on Yash Rathod’s career-best 194 and Rajat Patidar’s 101 in Central’s first-innings 511.

Duleep Trophy 2026-27 Teams

Six zonal sides compete, each drawn from the state teams within its region. Squads were confirmed by zonal selection committees between late July and early August. North Zone leans heavily on Jammu & Kashmir this year. Six players from the reigning Ranji Trophy champions made the 15-member squad.
